Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease a cookie sheet with shortening. Dip a 3 cookie cutter or the rim of a drinking glass in flour; press 6 outlines 1 apart onto greased cookie sheet and set aside. In a small bowl beat together butter, sugar, egg whites and vanilla, until blended. Using a flat metal spatula spread about a teaspoon of the batter into the round flour circles on the cookie sheet. Bake in oven for 4 to 5 minutes until edges are lightly golden brown. Set out typed fortunes and a glass on work service. As soon as cookies are finished baking remove from oven and set cookie sheet on a cooling rack. Working quickly, loosen cookies with a spatula and turn them bottom side-up.
Place a fortune in the center of the cookie and gently fold cookie in half. Hold edges together for a few seconds. Take folded ends of cookie and place the center of fold over the rim of a drinking glass. (See illustration above) Gently press down on the cookie to bend the cookie over the glass rim. If the cookie starts to firm up, return to oven for a few seconds to soften. Note: Since cookies cool and set up quickly, bake one cookie sheet at a time. Makes about 20 cookies.
