Our entire garden is raised about 12" above the surrounding area which allows it to dry out faster after heavy rains and to warm up quicker in Spring. Most raised bed gardens have the walkways at ground level and the beds raised a foot or so, which is perfectly okay. In our garden the walkways (planks) are at the same height as the raised beds, so our walkways stay dry and mud free, especially after it rains. Sometimes in spring it will rain almost every day and the entire yard becomes soaked. The raised beds, with their black plastic covering, stay surprising dry and plantable. If we were at ground level, we would probably have to wait longer in the season to plant.
